CCSSW.1.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure.
Students will gain an understanding of the relationship between writing and drawing in order to convey their stories. Through guided questions and group discussions, students will be able to make connections between their writing and/or clarify points they have learned.
CCSSW.1.2 Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
With the help of guided ideas, students will develop and arrange their story in a chronological order, adding a beginning, middle, and end to complete the story.
CCSSW.2.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.
Students will review the importance and use for linking words in writing and expand their knowledge on how to provide reasons to support their writing.
CCSSWS.K.1. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book (e.g., my favorite book is …).
Students will write and draw to create an opinion piece that expresses their preference or opinion about something.
RF.K.1. Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
Students will observe and analyze their original work using various resources to organize their thinking process.
WS.K.3. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
Students will use resources to brainstorm their ideas.
SL.1.1. Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
With guided questions, students will discuss and share ideas/thoughts about topics.
SL.4.2. Paraphrase portions of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats. Including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
Students will publish and share their finished narratives with their peers during a quick show-and-tell session.
L5.3. Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.
Students working individually or in groups to construct stories will help students become more proficient in language.
RL6.5. Analyze how a particular sentence, chapter, scene, or stanza fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the theme, setting, or plot.
Students will apply the understanding of story building through brainstorming, allowing them to develop the background, setting, character and plot of their story.
